Blog Post #10

Do you Teach or do you Educate?
I didn’t start my college career as an education major. I really had no idea what I wanted to do, except for the fact that I wanted to help people. I decided nursing would be a great path when I was a junior and even got into the program at South. I quickly found out that was not the right road for me however. After much consideration I decided education would be a great direction.
I love the idea of making a difference in a child’s life. I want to pass on my love of science to my students. Science is such an important area of study that many students lose interest in at a young age. As a teacher I want to change that. I want to show my students how science plays a role in our everyday lives and how important it is. If we inspire our students and show them how excited we are about the subjects we teach they will also be inspired.
Don’t let them take pencils home
This was a really inspiring post. I hate that there are teachers like this woman who put down students and don’t even try to encourage them. These kinds of teachers don’t focus on the solution to the problem they just focus on the cause which doesn’t help the students at all. The author really confronted the problem of taking home the pencils and changed it! This was a very thought provoking post!

  1. Hey Audrey!
Your passion to showcase science as important AND interesting is phenomenal; that's the kind of desire that teachers should have about their future careers!
"Don't Let Them Take the Pencils Home!" was a response post to Larry Ferlazzo's blog post about an article he read that summarized the results of a study about the affect that home and school computers have on standardized test scores; in essence, Johnson's post was a satirically written post about that article. I published it in my blog so that readers could see the original point. The 'pencils' were a metaphor for computers, and I think some students were unaware. It would be great to hear HOW this post inspired you, and what thoughts it provoked. Tell us more-I want to know!

  2. Hey Audrey!
I enjoyed reading you post. I think it is very unfortunate that you did not know what you wanted to do at first. Although I have always wanted to teach, not everyone knows right off. I am very glad to hear that you love science. I do enjoy it but it is not my favorite! It sounds like you have great ideas planned. Maybe you can share some of them with me so my lessons are not so boring. You are very correct; showing students how exciting subjects can be will inspire them. On the other hand, I also missed the second post. I did not understand that this was a metaphoric writing. Next time we both may want to look a little closer. After Dr. Strange explained the post was about computers I saw what he was talking about. All the clues given should have gave us hints!
